My first job was in retail, a booming industry back then. I joined a leading Hong Kong fashion retailer, one of the first to launch an executive trainee programme. Six of us, fresh graduates from different countries, were assigned to various departments before hitting the shop floor as salespeople, senior salespeople, and even assistant store managers.

Despite the first job gone for eight months of hands-on experience, they were unforgettable. Yet, the experience left a lasting impact. As trainees, we were required to submit weekly one-page suggestion reports to the CEO. Though I can’t recall the details, and the CEO eventually passed them to the GM and Marketing Manager in-charge of the Trainee programme, the act of being heard was powerful. As a young employee, having a platform to share ideas—no matter if they were adopted—gave me a sense of value, care, and joy.

Now, as businesses face resource constraints, enhancing employee experience doesn’t require hefty budgets. Positive mentorship and leadership can make all the difference. In tough times, with lean teams and low morale, genuine appreciation from supervisors is vital. A kind word acknowledging today’s effort, even if not perfect, can spark 20% more enthusiasm tomorrow in my mind.
