Learned English by drafting emails: Building a DEI Workplace to optimize Employee Experience

Once, I worked for a company led by a once-prominent boss, a former vice-chair of a business chamber. Market shifts had dimmed his past glory, yet he clung to memories of success. Weekly meetings were a ritual of reading pre-written reports, with any new ideas swiftly dismissed by his refrain, “I’ve tried that before…” followed by lengthy tales of his glory days. This lack of respect stifled morale and innovation.
What left a deeper mark was his obsession with email perfection. A former English teacher turned entrepreneur, he scrutinized every draft with red-pen circles and crosses. One email took nine revisions before approval, delaying a client response until the next day. This fixation on details disregarded employees’ efforts and time, leaving us feeling undervalued.
In today’s social media age, employee experience is paramount. Newer generations, well-traveled and value-driven, won’t blindly conform to keep a job. To retain talent, companies must prioritize respect and embrace DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) to foster an inclusive workplace:
🌟 Diversity: Welcome employees from varied backgrounds, encouraging unique perspectives to spark innovation.
🌟 Equity: Ensure fair opportunities for growth, regardless of seniority or background.
🌟 Inclusion: Create an open environment where employees feel valued and empowered to share ideas.
Simple acts—like genuinely listening to employees or acknowledging their efforts—can transform a workplace into one that’s vibrant and cohesive. When employees feel respected, they’re more engaged and driven to contribute to shared success.
Does your workplace make every employee feel respected? How can DEI shape a more inclusive culture? Let’s discuss!
